PV: Yu Jinyoung. Sat 22nd June 7 - 9pm

Jinyoung Yu Private View: Saturday, 22nd June 2013, 7 - 9 pm CHOI&LAGER Gallery is pleased to present its first exhibition by Jinyoung Yu in Cologne, Germany. The sculptor Jinyoung Yu manufactures full-scale, transparent, doll-like figures out of PVC and often calls them "invisible people". Their expressionless faces are in great contrast to their colorful clothing and noticeable decorations. Although the facial expressions of the figures almost have a hypnotising effect, one can’t but notice colorful stockings or other accessories, such as a dog or a little children’s bag. In her works, Jinyoung Yu presents people, who cannot simply be described as alienated or depressed. The artist creates characters that, instead of coping with everybody and everything, build up their own space in which they refuse to take in possibly destructive influences from the modern society. Thus, when looking at these "invisible people“, one is also looking at the artist’s impressions of a modern society, including themes speaking of anonymity, loneliness and the lack of communication. Jinyoung Yu was born in Korea 1977 and lives and works in Seoul. She got her master’s degree in sculpture at Sungshin Women’s University and has since exhibited at Union Gallery in London, and various group exhibitions in New York, Miami and Los Angeles. After her show at Choi&Lager Gallery in Cologne, she will present next her work at the YellowStone Art Museum in Montana, USA.
