VACATIO
FOTOGRAFIA – Festival Internazionale di Roma arriva al 2013 con un progetto che ne conferma la crescita di prestigio ed il respiro internazionale, promuovendo la fotografia contemporanea nelle sue diverse forme e linguaggi e valorizzando i talenti emergenti con un’attenzione sempre più concreta alle produzioni originali.
Dopo Futurespective, Motherland e Work, la XII edizione di FOTOGRAFIA indaga il tema Vacatio, ovvero della sospensione e dell’assenza in fotografia, continuando il suo cammino di ricerca in ambito visivo.
Ragionare su questo tema significa riflettere fortemente e con pazienza sull’atto del fotografare, sulla specificità della disciplina anche in relazione alle nuove tecnologie, significa capire sin dove può arrivare la sottrazione e ragionare sul confine tra la fotografia e le altre arti. Sospensione e assenza si intendono qui in contrapposizione a valori fotografici di riempimento e di rappresentazione nei confronti del soggetto fotografato.
Il bisogno di fotografare, il riflettere su cambiamenti di identità, l’assenza stessa del mezzo fotografico o del fotografo durante la fotografia. L’inversione di tendenza è rappresentata dal sancire in via definitiva l’importanza del fotografo sul soggetto fotografato, appunto il non cercare soggetti in un’epoca di incertezze strutturali e sociali. Asciugare tutto, arrivare all’assenza come essenza. Rispettare la condizione individuale e di solitudine; su questi nuovi scenari labili, ricostruire un tessuto forte della fotografia d’autore ricominciando a lavorare sulle singole identità, lottare per la secca estetica di ognuno di noi, la profondità.
In un’epoca di “vacatio” istituzionali, ripartiamo dal bisogno di testimoniare, di combattere nuove e vecchie assenze nel mondo, dall’affermare con la fotografia che qualcosa è esistito, e interrogarsi, ora che abbiamo bisogno di punti fermi, che la fotografia può spaziare anche in terreni non reali, su cosa ci manca o di cosa sentiremo la mancanza. La sospensione e l’assenza nella fotografia, che per sua stessa definizione è una pratica di pensiero diffusa e dal basso, é testimonianza, riflessione, velocità e concetti.
Su queste basi lavoriamo alla prossima edizione del Festival, nell’ottobre 2013 nella sua nuova versione al MACRO di via Nizza.
FOTOGRAFIA – Rome’s International Festival Rome’s International Festival 2013 comes with a project that confirms its increasing prestige and international scope, by promoting contemporary photography in its different forms and languages and enhancing emerging talents with an increasingly concrete attention to original productions.
After Futurespective, Motherland and Work, the 12th edition of FOTOGRAFIA explores the theme of “Vacatio”, or rather the suspension and absence in photography, continuing the research in the visual expression.
Reasoning on this theme means strongly and patiently reflecting on the act of photographing, the specificity of the medium, also in relation to new technologies, understanding to what extent we can stretch subtraction and on the boundaries between photography and the other arts. Suspension and absence are here intended in contrast with the photographic values of filling and of representing the photographed subject.
The need to photograph, the suspension of the institutions, the reflection on changes of identity, and/or the very absence of the photographic medium or of the photographer in the photograph. The reversal of tendency is represented by the final sanctioning of the importance of the photographer over the importance of the photograph, the fact of not seeking a subject, in a time of structural uncertainties, of institutional, political and practical “vacatio”.
Reduce everything to the bone, reach the absence as essence. Respect the individual and solitary condition; on these new transient scenarios, rebuild a strong fabric of artistic photography by resuming to work on single identities, to say we are here, this is us and start to build a multitude of fragments of absence and see what happens, find the essential beauty, fight for the essential aesthetics within us, the depth.
In times of many institutional “vacatio”, we find the need to testify, to fight new and old absences in the world, to state through photography that something has existed, and ask ourselves, now that we need fixed points and photography can also cover non real territories, what we are missing or what we would be missing. Photography approaches the “vacatio”, because by its own definition (and technology helps!) it’s a practice of thought, common to all and from the roots, it is testimony, reflection, speed and concepts.
On this base we are working on the next edition of the festival, in October 2013, in its new version at the MACRO in Via Nizza.
