Sabato 21 dicembre, alle ore 11.00, presso lo Studio Trisorio, sarà inaugurata la mostra Place and Memory dell'artista americano Steve Riedell.
Verranno presentati i suoi ultimi lavori su tela, Folded-Over Paintings, insieme ad alcuni lavori su tavola e opere su carta.
Nei Folded-Over Paintings progettazione e casualità si incontrano e si confondono. Nel passaggio da un tempo all'altro, da una fase all'altra della loro realizzazione, nel breve viaggio dal tavolo di lavoro al supporto di legno, le tele possono generare forme inaspettate che l'artista sceglie di assecondare o di modificare.
Riedell fa assumere alle tele forme molteplici e inusitate: le ripiega più volte su se stesse, crea dislivelli nella sovrapposizione, ribalta recto e verso, le intride di cera, di colori saturi e brillanti, le fissa al supporto lasciando a vista le graffe metalliche che bucano la tela, fino a trovare la giusta combinazione fra gli strati di pittura e i piani della superficie. Più tardi, solo quando i lavori sono compiuti e raccolti insieme, l'artista vi ritrova tracce e memorie di oggetti che gli sono familiari. Si tratta di oggetti dimenticati sulle spiagge della sua infanzia in California, legati al sole e all'acqua. Sono «canotti e materassini gonfi o sgonfi, palloni da spiaggia, sedie a sdraio sempre sul punto di collassare, un costume da bagno irrigidito dal sole (...). I colori dei singoli pezzi sembravano inizialmente mantenermi a distanza, ma poi, man mano che mi avvicinavo si attenuavano e sembravano alludere ad un uso precedente» (Riedell).
La mostra Place and Memory sarà presentata al Borgo di Postignano nel mese di luglio 2014.

Steve Riedell è nato nel 1954 a Inglewood in California. Vive e lavora fra Philadelphia e Frenchtown nel New Jersey. Ha ottenuto numerosi premi e riconoscimenti come il Director’s Prize (1999), l’Elizabeth Grant (1999/2000), il PCA Grant (2000), il Pollock/Krasner Grant (2000/2001), il Mildred Bougher Award (2001), l’SOS Grant (2002), è stato finalista per il Gottlieb Grant e ha esposto in numerose gallerie e spazi pubblici negli Stati Uniti.
In Italia è rappresentato dallo Studio Trisorio dove ha già realizzato nel 2007, con Lawrence Carroll, la mostra A Conversation Between Friends.

Saturday 21 December, at 11.00 a.m. at the Studio Trisorio, the Place and Memory exhibit by American artist Steve Riedell will be inaugurated.
The artist's most recent works on canvas, Folded-Over Paintings, will be presented together with a selection of his works on panel and on paper.
In Folded-Over Paintings design and fortuitousness meet and merge together. In the passage from one phase of the creation process to another and during the brief journey from the work table to the wooden supports, the canvases assume unexpected forms which the then artist decides whether to indulge in or change.
Riedell makes the canvases assume various, bizarre forms: they are folded over several times creating irregularities in the overlapping folds, with the obverse and verso sides of the canvas occasionally reversed, rich, brilliant colours are mixed and affixed to the support leaving the metal staples which tear the canvas in plain sight until the artist finds the exact combination between the layers of paint and the surface. After the works have been completed and gathered together, the artist finds traces and recollections of familiar objects. These are objects forgotten on the beaches during his childhood in California, tied to sun and water. They are «rubber boats and inflated or deflated air mattresses, beach balls, chairs and sun beds - always on the verge of collapse - or sun-dried bathing suits (...). The colours of the individual pieces initially seem to keep me at a distance, but as I gradually approach, they become more subdued and seem suggest a former use » (Riedell).
The exhibit Place and Memory will be presented at Borgo di Postignano in July of 2014.

Steve Riedell was born in Inglewood, California in 1954. He lives and works between Philadelphia and Frenchtown, New Jersey. He has received numerous prizes and awards including the Director’s Prize (1999), the Elizabeth Grant (1999/2000), the PCA Grant (2000), the Pollock/Krasner Grant (2000/2001), the Mildred Bougher Award (2001), the SOS Grant (2002), was a finalist for the Gottlieb Grant and has exhibited in numerous galleries and public space in the United States.
In Italy, he is represented by Studio Trisorio where he, together with Lawrence Carrol, realized the exhibit entitled A Conversation Between Friends in 2007.
