Prometeogallery di Ida Pisani è lieta di presentare la mostra personale italiana di Veres Szabolcs.
Artista talentuoso e fortemente concentrato sulla capacità della pittura di raccogliere testimonianze profonde del nostro presente, Veres Szabolcs si è formato alla scuola di Cluj Napoca, uno dei luoghi più fertili della ricerca visiva contemporanea. La Fabrica de Pensule – il grande edificio industriale divenuto emblema della nuova espressione creativa – ha visto passare negli ultimi anni alcuni fra gli artisti europei più talentuosi dell’ultima generazione. Fra gli altri: Ciprian Muresan, Adrian Ghenie, Victor Man, Serban Savu.Cinica e sferzante la pittura di Veres Szabolcs prende avvio dalla rivisitazione di alcuni fra i temi compositivi più longevi della storia dell’arte. Le grandi figure umane presentate in mostra si portano appresso la memoria della ritrattistica ieratica che ha arredato nei secoli le gallerie di ritratti più solenni d’Europa, ma paiono come esplose al contatto con la cultura contemporanea. A partire dalla loro stessa anatomia volti, muscoli, vestiti, atteggiamenti e posizioni collassano in un concentrato di contraddizioni: il racconto di un’estetica smisurata e fuori proporzione fatta di una pittura scomoda e poco accomodante.Da questo punto di vista la ricerca di Veres Szabolcs si allinea alle indagini visive che mettono in discussione la capacità rappresentativa dell’immagine. Fra i padri storici legati alla pittura vanno annoverati gli artisti che più di altri hanno trattato le complicazione legate alla presunta oggettività delle immagini: James Ensor, George Groz, Francis Bacon, Sigmar Polke. Ma unitamente ad alcune colonne portati dell’espressionismo di matrice europea va considerata l’importanza di una passione di più ampia portata che vede Veres Szabolcs impegnato in questi anni in un dottorato di ricerca sul grottesco. Allora agli artisti già citati vanno almeno aggiunte alcune fra le tradizioni anonime che attraversano i secoli sotto la definizione di mirabilia: quella della caricatura, delle fiere fantastiche, le rappresentazioni di mostri, vecchi irriverenti o satiri tentatori. È dalla trame di queste suggestioni che nasce una pittura mai censoria, ideale o moralista che mentre passeggia fra le viscere rincorre se stessa e il suo gesto.Veres Szabolcs (1983, Satu Mare, Romania) vive e lavora a Cluj-Napoca. I suoi quadri sono stati esposti al MODEM – Center for Modern and Contemporary Art e al MNAC – National Museum of Contemporary Art di Bucarest. Nel 2010 la Spencer Brownstone Gallery di New York gli ha dedicato una mostra personale. Dal 2011 è insegnate di pittura alla Facoltà di Arte e Desing di Cluj-Napoca. Veres Szabolcs.Veres Szabolcs studied at the school of Cluj-Napoca, one of the most creative centres of contemporary visual research and has become a highly talented artist with an intense focus on the ability of painting to grasp profound truths about our present-day world. In recent years the Fabrica de Pensule – the great factory building that has become a symbol of new creative expression – has seen some of the most talented young European artists pass through its doors. These include Ciprian Muresan, Adrian Ghenie, Victor Man and Serban Savu.Cynical and caustic, Veres Szabolcs’s painting starts out from a revisitation of some of the most enduring compositional themes in the history of art. The great human figures we see in the exhibition recall the hieratic portraiture that adorned the most solemn portrait galleries in Europe, and yet they appear to explode as they come into contact with contemporary culture. Starting with their own anatomy, the faces, muscles, clothes, poses and positions collapse into a concentration of contradictions, telling the tale of a boundless, totally disproportionate aesthetic in an inconvenient, uncompromising form of painting.From this point of view, Veres Szabolcs’s work runs along similar lines to those visual investigations that bring into question the representative capacity of the image. The founding fathers of painting include artists like James Ensor, George Groz, Francis Bacon, and Sigmar Polke who, more than others, have dealt with the complex issues involved in the presumed objectivity of images. But, together with some of the mainstays of European expressionism it is also important to consider the broader scope of interests of Veres Szabolcs, who in recent years has been working on a PhD programme on the grotesque. In this case, together with the artists mentioned there are also some anonymous traditions that have been handed down over the centuries and referred to as “mirabilia”: those of caricature, freak shows, the representation of monsters, irreverent old men or beguiling satyrs. This is the web of atmospheres that emerges from a painting that is never censorious, idealistic or moralistic, and that chases after itself and its own actions as it wanders through the viscera.Veres Szabolcs (1983, Satu Mare, Romania) lives and works in Cluj-Napoca.
