Screen Test
Jani Ruscica works primarly with video, photograhy, sculpture and other media exploring the connections between cinema, theatre and perfomance.
His reaserch, based on humanistic and anthropological bases, reflects on how the perception and the definition of a place are influenced by individual experiences, cultural and even scientific factors. In his practice, he confronts the history and the temporal stratifications of a site with contemporary zeitgeist; thus, he generates complex and singular semantic implications.
His second solo show at OTTO ZOO develops starting from a video, Screen test (for a Living sculpture) (2012, multichannel installation 16 mm transferred to HD,3’) a subtle study on sculpture and on form, duration and the performative act. Realized in collaboration with artist Sini Pellki and with a commission of MoMA PS1 and Creative Time MTV’s Art Breaks, the film is a three channel video depicting a living sculpture where, with a minimal swerve, stasis breaks into movement.
Connected to this video are also two series of works referring to the film production phases: a set of photographies of the two protagonists and a set of mixed media collages, Material Studies, which wander about the concept of matter and plasticity.
Jani Ruscica (Savonlinna,1978) studied at Chelsea College of Art and Design in London and at the Academy of Fine Arts in Helsinki. He lives in Helsinki. Recent exhibitions include Found Translation, at Chapter L’ Casino, Luxembourg, 5th Momentum Biennial, Moss (Norway), Life Forms at Bonnier Konsthall, Stockholm, Shifting Identies at MACRO, Rome, as well as screenings in istitutions such as Centre Pompidou, Paris, TATE Modern, London, MoMA, New York.
Jani Ruscica è un artista finlandese che lavora con il video, la fotografia e la scultura, esplorando le connessioni tra cinema, teatro e performance. La sua ricerca, fondata su basi sostanzialmente umanistiche e antropologiche, indaga come la percezione e la definizione di un luogo cambino secondo l’esperienza individuale, in base a fattori personali, culturali e persino scientifici. Nella sua pratica mette a confronto di volta in volta il vissuto e le stratificazioni temporali di un contesto con lo zeitgeist contemporaneo, creando significati e relazioni semantiche complesse e straordinarie.
La sua seconda personale a OTTO ZOO prende spunto da un video, Screen test (for a Living Sculpture), uno studio sulla scultura e sulla forma e la durata dell'atto performativo realizzato da Ruscica nel 2012, su commissione del MOMA PS1 di New York e di Creative Time MTV's Art Breaks. Si tratta di un film in tre parti, realizzato in collaborazione con l’artista Sini Pellki, che raffigura una scultura vivente in cui, con una minima azione, dalla stasi si passa al movimento.
Al video si riferiscono anche altre due serie di lavori in mostra, entrambe ispirate alle sue fasi di preparazione: alcune fotografie dei due protagonisti e un’inedita raccolta di collage mixed-media, Material Studies, che divagano sul concetto di materia e plasticità.
Di origine italiana, Jani Ruscica (Savonlinna, 1978) ha studiato al Chelsea College of Art and Design di Londra e all’Accademia di Belle Arti di Helsinki. Vive a Helsinki. Tra le sue mostre recenti “Found in Translation – Chapter L”, Casino Luxembourg, 5th Monumentum Biennial, Moss, Norvegia, “Life Form”, Bonniers Konsthall, Stoccolma, “Shifting Identities”, MACRO, Roma (a cura di Ludovico Pratesi). Screening dei suoi film sono stati organizzati al Centre Pompidou di Parigi, alla Tate Modern di Londra e al MOMA di New York.
