AlbumArte inaugura lunedì 18 settembre 2017 alle ore 18.30 la mostra Tra ciglia e pensiero dell’artista lituana Eglė Budvytytė che espone per la prima volta in Italia una selezione delle sue opere video.
La mostra, che rimarrà aperta fino all’11 novembre 2017, è curata da Benedetta Carpi De Resmini e si impernia su scenari e contesti inusuali posti accanto a elementi quotidiani, dicotomie strutturali alle opere della giovane artista. Eglė Budvytytė crea all’interno delle sue opere dei cortocircuiti tra realtà e finzione, aprendo questioni sul ruolo del soggetto rispetto a una riflessione sociale in senso più ampio.
In mostra una selezione di opere video che riflettono sul tempo economico e sociale che scandisce gli spostamenti, i ritmi della vita quotidiana, andando a creare vuoti momentanei in cui l’immaginazione prende il sopravvento.
Il percorso narrativo si apre con Secta (2006) che fa da contrappunto all’universo immaginario di Magicians (2011), mentre il movimento incontrollato del corpo dei bambini di Shaking Children (2013) si collega alle rigide disposizioni di As if you are catching a bomb (2013) – opere video entrambe nate dalla collaborazione con Bart Groenendaal – le quali guidano le azioni di un uomo.
In uno scenario mondiale basato sempre di più sulla cyber intelligence, in cui i conflitti sia economici che sociali sembrano governati dal potere virtuale della rete, l’opera dell’artista si pone come naturale reazione di denuncia alla società contemporanea. Gruppi o realtà individuali sfidano le convenzioni, condotti alcune volte da una voce fuori campo, come un deus ex machina, che racconta o li conduce a contrapporsi alle regole imposte.
Il corpo diventa per l’artista lo strumento per sfidare i comportamenti codificati, per ricordare a tutti che il potenziale di ognuno risiede nella fantasia, unico mezzo per raggiungere, con velocità e traiettorie differenti da uomo a uomo, lo stesso obiettivo: la libertà. In occasione della mostra sono previsti eventi collaterali che riflettono sulle dinamiche affrontate.
Eglė Budvytytė (Lituania, 1981) vive attualmente tra Vilnius e Amsterdam. Realizza video e performance al fine di esplorare la relazione che intercorre tra corpo, architettura, ambiente e pubblico. Partendo da coreografie di diversi performer – al fine di rappresentare gesti che possono apparire spesso contraddittori rispetto al contesto in cui si sviluppano – l’artista guarda alla capacità del corpo di sfidare i comportamenti convenzionali e le narrazioni normative implicite all’interno degli spazi pubblici. I suoi lavori sono stati esposti a Liste, Basel; Art Dubai commissions 2017, la 19° Biennale di Sidney, De Appel Arts Centre, CAC di Vilnius e lo Stedeljik Museum di Amsterdam. Eglė è stata artista residente presso Le Pavillon, Palais de Tokyo (Parigi, 2012) e Wiels, Contemporary art centre, (Brussels, 2013).

On Monday, 18th September 2017, at 6:30 pm, AlbumArte inaugurates the exhibition Long Time Between the Eyelash and the Brain by Lithuanian artist Eglė Budvytytė, who presents a selection of her video art pieces for the first time in Italy.
The show will stay open until 11th November 2017; it is curated by Benedetta Carpi De Resmini and focuses on uncommon situations and contexts juxtaposed to more ordinary and mundane elements, resulting in structural dichotomies and contrasts. In her work, Eglė Budvytytė produces short circuits between reality and fiction, opening up questions on the role of the subject in relation to wider reflections on collective society.
The selection of video art works chosen for the exhibition examines the economic and social time that marks the rhythms of the everyday life, creating momentary voids where imagination takes over.
At the start of the exhibition path, Secta (2006) stands as a counterpoint to the imaginary universe of Magicians (2011), whilst the reckless body movement of children in Shaking Children (2013) connects to the strict regulations that drive the man’s actions in As if you are catching a bomb (2013), both created in collaboration with Bart Groenendaal.
The artist’s work poses itself as a natural reaction against contemporary society, in a world scenario that is more and more governed by cyber intelligence, where social and economic conflicts are ruled by the power of virtual networks. As driven by external inputs, by some deus ex machina, collectives and individual realities challenge conventions and operates contrary to the rules imposed.
The body becomes an instrument to contest systematic behaviors, to remind everyone that our strength resides in imagination. With different times and trajectories, each of us could achieve the shared goal, that is, freedom.
During the time of the exhibition, additional events will be organized to reflect on such issues.
Eglė Budvytytė (1981) is an artist based in Vilnius and Amsterdam. She makes videos performance situations to explore the relationships between body, architecture, environment and audience. By choreographing performers to enact gestures that can often seem contradictory to their surroundings, uncannily out of context and sometimes filled with a sense of emergency, she looks at the body’s ability to challenge conventions of conduct and the narratives of normativity implicit in public spaces. Her work was shown amongst others at Liste art fair in Basel, Art Dubai commissions 2017, 19th Biennale of Sydney, De Appel Arts Centre, CAC in Vilnius, and Stedeljik Museum in Amsterdam. Egle was resident at Le Pavillon, Palais de Tokyo (Paris, FR, 2012) and at Wiels, Contemporary art centre, (Brussels, BE, 2013).
