Fondazione Giuliani è lieta di presentare Permanente, prima personale romana dell’artista francese Caroline Achaintre. La mostra fornisce uno spaccato della sua produzione artistica includendo arazzi trapuntati a mano, sculture in ceramica, disegni ad acquerello e opere in vimini. Per la mostra in Fondazione, Achaintre ha realizzato un’opera ex novo, Louis Q. (2020), un arazzo nato nel periodo trascorso dall’artista in lockdown a Londra. Questa sua ultima creazione trova ispirazione nell’emblematica maschera con il becco del medico della peste del 17 secolo che, in questo caso, perde però le sue caratteristiche tipicamente macabre impregnandosi dell’ironia tipica dello spirito carnevalesco.
Achaintre fonda le sue radici nell’Espressionismo e nel Primitivismo tedesco da cui si sviluppano alcune delle tematiche protagoniste della sua produzione. Le sue creazioni sono maschere deformate e profondamente legate alle collezioni etnografiche occidentali, richiamano il dualismo e ci accompagnano in una parata del carnevale dell’assurdo. La bellezza delle sue opere risiede nella distorsione, nel perturbante freudiano e nella coesistenza tra l’oscurità e la luce come parti complementari di un unico essere.
Se i grandi arazzi ci ipnotizzano principalmente per il loro spirito ludico, la qualità viscosa delle opere in ceramica ci seduce con eleganza attraverso i richiami più o meno espliciti al controverso mondo del fetish. Le opere in ceramica dalle superfici lucide e seducenti appaiono in contrasto con le opere trapuntate in lana decisamente più calde e familiari, creando una tensione che incoraggia lo spettatore a conversare con il cast di personaggi animati e poliedrici dell’artista. Le opere tessili, in particolare, incorporano molteplici personaggi che coesistono all’interno della trama colorata dei fili rievocando l’aspetto sciamanico e animista che collega omogeneamente la sua produzione artistica. I disegni a inchiostro e acquerello possiedono una natura figurativa e astratta che esplora l’interesse di Achaintre nei confronti dell’analisi psicologica dei test di Rorschach e degli inquietanti film di fantascienza e horror connessi all’estetica della musica heavy metal. La modalità in cui i lavori di Achaintre si caricano di umorismo, prendendo vita di fronte ai nostri occhi, viene accentuato anche dall’approccio dadaista utilizzato dall’artista per la scelta dei titoli delle sue opere che spesso nascono dallo stesso flusso di libere associazioni da cui prendono vita anche le sculture.
Permanente è una coproduzione tra Fondazione Giuliani, Belvedere 21, Vienna, MO.CO Montpellier Contemporain e CAPC di Bordeaux. La terza tappa romana è stata realizzata grazie al sostegno della Fondazione Nuovi Mecenati di Roma.
Caroline Achaintre è nata a Toulouse, in Francia, nel 1969 e attualmente vive e lavora a Londra. Fondazione Giuliani is very pleased to present Permanente, the first solo show in Rome by French artist, Caroline Achaintre. The exhibition is comprised of a broad selection of recent works, which include hand-tufted wall hangings, ceramics, drawings and wicker sculptures. Achaintre has also produced a new wall hanging specifically for the show in the Foundation. Created while the artist was in lockdown in London, Louis Q. finds inspiration in the historic beaked mask of plague doctors, originating in the 17th Century; however, in this instance, the connotation loses its typically macabre characteristics and adopts a carnival-like irony.
Achaintre’s practice is rooted in an interest in German Expressionisim and Primitivism, out of which some of the main themes in her production develop. Her mask-like creations are deeply linked to Western ethnographic collections, the notion of duality, and accompany us in a carnival parade of the absurd. The beauty of her work lies in the distortion, in the uncanny, in the co-existence of darkness and light as complementary parts of a single being. Her ink and watercolour drawings are both figurative and abstract, and explore her interest in the psychological analyses of Rorschach tests, sci-fi and horror films, and the aestethetics of heavy metal music.
If the wall hangings hypnotise us with their playfullness, the viscous quality of the ceramics elegantly seduces us with more or less explict references to the controversial world of the fetish. The ceramics’ lustrous surfaces contrast with the decidedly warmer and more familiar tufted pieces, creating a tension that encourages the viewer to converse with a cast of animated and multifaceted characters. The textile works, in particular, incorporate multiple characters that coexist within the coloured weaves of the threads, evoking shamanic and animistic aspects that pervade Achaintre’s artistic production. The way in which the artist’s works are filled with humour, coming to life before our eyes, is also accentuated by the Dadist approach used by the artist when titling the works, often arising from the same flow of free associations from which the sculptures come to life.
